    Creative City Design is an open access, peer-reviewed publication covering urbanism, urban planning and urban design, architecture, and built environment studies. CCD is quarterly published by Mashhad Branch, Islamic Azad University, Mashhad, Iran, and receives NO PUBLICATION FEE from authors. The journal aims at establishing a bridge between theory and practice in the fields of architectural and design research, urban design, urban planning, urban development, and built environment studies. A broad outline of the journal scope includes high-quality original research papers, review papers, short communications, case and technical reports and notes to the editor.

      In the past and in Iran's traditional architecture, urban neighborhoods were regarded as the spine and the most significant small urban complexes. However, physical renovation measures have stripped these neighborhoods of their dignity and identity indices. During urban development, neighborhoods with identities were gradually subjected to physical deterioration, leading to their dignity waning. As a result, urban places of these neighborhoods lost their identity elements and this led to deserted neighborhoods especially from their original inhabitants. Due to the importance of place dignity and lack of conceptualization of that in the field of urban geography, this study by using the grounded theory aims to discover and extract dimensions and components of place dignity from middle and historic fabrics to achieve a particular conceptual structure linked to it. Because the elites of urban planning and architecture of the country have influenced the decisions and implementation of urban renewal policies in the contemporary century of Iran and have played an important role in planning or guiding urban development programs and projects and also, due to the complexity and interdisciplinary nature of the topics related to the "city", in this research data was collected through an in-depth interview with several leading and decision-making experts in the academic, policy-making and executive fields of architecture, social sciences, geography and urban planning of the country. 435 phrases or sentences were extracted at the first coding stage. Afterward, 23 sub categories were identified as components of place dignity in six main categories, including cultural, physical-environmental, social, perceptual, functional, and economic dimensions. Validity in this research was ensured through constant comparative analysis and by following the theory of Davis and Rodd regarding precision in doing research. Manuscript profile

      In recent years, the physical form of Mashhad, as the second metropolis of the country, has been affected by macro economic indicators. In order to resist the impulses and pressure of the upcoming economic trends, it is necessary to measure the dimensions and the effect of the mentioned economic forces on the physical form of Mashhad in the past. Therefore The question of the current research is "What is the role of economic trends in the formation of the physical form of Mashhad ?".The approach of the current research is quantitative and a longitudinal survey research method has been used. In order to analyze the trend of economic indicators, the vector auto regression model has been used to measure the effects of variables on each other.Also Landsat satellite images have also been used to analyze the changes in the physical form of Mashhad city.The results of the research show that in recent years, the country's economic developments have led to an increase in the price of currency. This, along with other economic indicators, has caused inflation in the price of land, housing, and rent, and has prompted the city managers to reduce the inflation in land and housing by allowing the growth of Mashhad. The directions of development in the early years were generally in the north and east of the city, but in recent years, the city has expanded to the west and south. The results of the research show that the variables of exchange rate, Gini coefficient and unemployment rate have more stable effects than other economic variables on the physical form of Mashhad city in such a way that whenever one of these three variables is associated with a strong fluctuation, the physical form of Mashhad city is also affected.       Lack of attention to the quality of the concept of development in urban management, especially the development of internal development, has created many problems for today's cities. Indiscriminate and scattered expansion of the city, increase in the costs of urban services, increase in the use of new land are among these problems. However, most of the time there is space for development within the city boundaries and one of the suitable options for development is to use the intermediate development approach,which should be considered in big cities. Therefore, in this study, whit using an analytical-descriptive method, development potentials and important indicators of infill development in Qazvin city are determined. For this purpose, by collecting the views of a sample of people living in this city and urban management specialists, with using the hierarchical method of AHP, the weight and prioritization of the important criteria of infill development were determined and then in GIS software the weights obtained from the Dimtel method are multiplied in the layers, and finally, the layers are overlapped by using Fuzzy Overlay Gamma, and the final map is obtained, which determines the capacity of infill development of Qazvin city. The results showed that the variables of management and economic group are in the weakest condition in the target neighborhoods in Qazvin. According to experts' opinions, among the 13 important criteria for feasibility study of the development of Qazvin city, 3 building quality criteria such as floor of building( with 0.229), age of building(with 0.186) and slope( with 0.150) had the greatest impact on land suitability for Qazvin's infill development. Another results showed that the detailed zoning map of Qazvin city shows that out of the total 64132000 square meters of Qazvin lands, 6.57% of the lands are completely suitable for infill development, 15.45% of the suitable lands, 26.21% somewhat unsuitable, 31.19% unsuitable And 19% is completely inappropriate.The amount of development of the city in the next 5 years was determined to be 1,411,000 square meters. Also, the amount of land that can be considered as reserve land was estimated to be around 3924000. Therefore, based on the findings of the research, Qazvin city has a good potential for infill development and using sustainable urban growth benefits. Manuscript profile

      The urban informal development is undeniable reality of a great number of cities across the world. Hence, many urbanism studies have been devoted to this topic. These scholarships have used various theoretical frameworks to explain this phenomenon. However, no comprehensive theoretical base is available for the subject yet. Therefore, this study aims to formulate an alternative theoretical foundation relying on contextualist worldview capacities. The research has been conducted with descriptive-analytical methodology through the review of contextualist literature. The results of the study in the first step answer the questions about the origin, philosophical background, evolution process, approaches, and dimensions of contextualism. In the next step, the research developed a new reading of contextualism to be a suitable theoretical framework for informal urbanism studies. This reading explains informal urbanism relying on multiple ontologies, pragmatic and plural epistemology, mixed methodology, and inclusive-flexible analytical framework. In the theoretical dimension, the results have revealed the reductionism of the view promoting contextualism in urbanism, so have reformulated and customized it to explain informal development. In the scientific dimension, moreover, it proposed the reading of suitable policymaking for urban managers regarding the informal settlements.       The neighborhood development offices in the neighborhoods targeted for regeneration have taken a big step towards increasing the participation of the residents. However, the city administration emphasizes solving the problems with a spatial approach rather than solving the economic and social problems. This study aims to analyze the performance of neighborhood development offices in selected neighborhoods (Sis Abad, Toroq, Darvi, 22 Bahman, and Vakil Abad) in Mashhad from a local participatory planning perspective. Using the “Plan-Process-Results (PPR)” approach, And the statistical population included 24 experts in the field of urban regeneration, the officials of the development offices of selected neighborhoods and the trustees of selected neighborhoods were used, and the means of collecting this research are semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and library studies.the research criteria including context building and trust building, use and promotion of local capacity to develop the neighborhood, drafting a strategic document for the regeneration of neighborhoods (participatory document), and interaction with the city managers and other government agencies were evaluated. The results concerning context building and trust building showed that although the trust-building projects have progressed up to 50%, execution challenges have led to the loss of the residents' trust to some extent. Furthermore, the neighborhood development document lacks any executive guarantee and legal support. Thus, it seems that trust building takes place step by step when the demands of residents are addressed. In addition, local knowledge, receiving public feedback, and local authorities can act as facilitators to build public trust and promote public support. Manuscript profile

      As the most human subject of architecture, housing and residential environments meet various needs of people and provide peace, health, nurture, and self-improvement [1]. Housing must be flexible to the circumstances growing or moving families face. Providing housing in worn-out urban fabrics deals with particular conditions. The Shaheed Maghoul Neighborhood is one of the worn-out fabrics of District 6 of Mashhad, where ethnic diversity can be witnessed. There are numerous non-Mashhadi individuals who did not build their houses and were forced to choose the pre-built residential units for living. The failure of the residential units to fulfill the needs of the residents through different stages of life brings about population relocation, followed by identity loss of the fabric. Flexibility is a proper response to solve housing in worn-out fabrics. In this study, which uses an applied objective and analytical methods, flexible housing provision strategies were initially identified. Next, the preferences of people of various ethnicities for changes to improve living conditions were introduced through a survey method in the study area. Considering the type of life stage people were in, strategies regarding flexibility were identified. According to research results, the cultural characteristics of people living in the urban fabric favor different strategies to meet housing needs in all life periods. Thus, to decrease housing problems in worn-out urban fabrics, attention to cultural and ethnic differences will be fundamental to the effectiveness of the design. However, the divisibility of units in worn-out urban fabrics is suggested among all flexibility strategies.       Given the interdisciplinary processes of designing a natural habitat for the crew in an extraterrestrial space such as Mars, the creation of a livable space habitat, which is compatible with technological requirements, goals of scientific missions, and human factors, is a major challenge to space architects and engineers.Therefore, the present review study sought to detect and investigate the effective components of physical and environmental structures of the habitat design on Mars. According to the results, the human factor is considered the first important component in designs, and the main goal of all efforts is ultimately human travel and habitation in space. Besides, environmental components such as pressure, temperature, gravity, atmosphere, cosmic radiation, ice water, and seasonal and daily changes make humans comply with the most important technical issues in designing these habitats. Their types of structure and materials are important physical components that affect the space architecture of habitats on this red planet. According to the research findings, the use of materials from the surface of Mars or wind structures, the utilization of regoliths from the surface of Mars, or the chemical synthesis of carbon nanotubes, and also their construction in suitable places such as the crater of Hellas Planitia and lava tube caves are suggestions for the construction of a permanent habitat on Mars inspired by the proposed examples. Furthermore, combining existing options with new conditions such as installing wind structures in the protected space of caves can be a new approach to design and can be considered an intelligent option.       A review of human history, activity and technology shows that, the changes in the environment and the health of citizens have gone together as an inseparable factor. Cities are complex systems that Recent developments in the lifestyle of people have caused the emergence of non-communicable diseases among the residents of cities. Furthermore, in recent decades, the world has witnessed a variety of emerging infectious diseases, some of which developed to pandemic world threatening outbreaks. This paper, as far as we know of, is the comprehensive and first review to evaluate relationship between the characteristics of urban form and urban health with an emphasis on epidemic diseases. Through a systematic review, the first step, compiled urban form characteristics that affect urban health, and then identified potential synergies and trade-offs between these dimensions. Research sources were examined based on the world's most authoritative scientific database. In the second step, resource retrieval was performed based on keywords, title and abstract, and finally, in the third step, analysis and conceptual model were developed. A framework based on the Health-oriented Urban Form (HUF) is proposed, synthesizing the inter linkages between urban form and urban health; providing a new holistic perspective on the topic. Looking at the communicable and non-communicable disease -physical and non-physical-urban form characteristics - technology and nature relationships simultaneously may contribute to practical guidance opportunity to build better and more sustainable societies and cities.       There are sustainability strategies in nature, which are the key to the survival and stability of components and ecosystems. Not only nature is a source of inspiration, and innovative ideas in solving human problems also is a powerful mentor for designing the built environment in symbiosis with the substrate ecology. Due to nature strategies’ complexities and their interdisciplinary character, the architectural design process needs to be known by nature-inspired framing. With the wide scale of biological information and the lack of recognition of applying nature strategies, a model is needed to use biological strategies in the architectural design process. This research aimed to explore the nature-strategies effective components in the architectural design process, to create a connection between the biological and architectural domains. Using the nature strategies to transfer, and apply them in the architectural domain, as well as how the nature strategies affect and transfer in the field of architecture have been explored by studying the nature-inspired design strategies and the projects and documentation of the experts in this field through theoretical Analysis, focus groups, and also logical argumentation and case study. The analysis of qualitative data was done with Fisher's exact test, and SPSS software was used. The main question of the research has been raised as follows: What are the effective components of nature-inspired strategies and their place in the architectural design process?       As the most human subject of architecture, housing and residential environments meet various needs of people and provide peace, health, nurture, and self-improvement [1]. Housing must be flexible to the circumstances growing or moving families face. Providing housing in worn-out urban fabrics deals with particular conditions. The Shaheed Maghoul Neighborhood is one of the worn-out fabrics of District 6 of Mashhad, where ethnic diversity can be witnessed. There are numerous non-Mashhadi individuals who did not build their houses and were forced to choose the pre-built residential units for living. The failure of the residential units to fulfill the needs of the residents through different stages of life brings about population relocation, followed by identity loss of the fabric. Flexibility is a proper response to solve housing in worn-out fabrics. In this study, which uses an applied objective and analytical methods, flexible housing provision strategies were initially identified. Next, the preferences of people of various ethnicities for changes to improve living conditions were introduced through a survey method in the study area. Considering the type of life stage people were in, strategies regarding flexibility were identified. According to research results, the cultural characteristics of people living in the urban fabric favor different strategies to meet housing needs in all life periods. Thus, to decrease housing problems in worn-out urban fabrics, attention to cultural and ethnic differences will be fundamental to the effectiveness of the design. However, the divisibility of units in worn-out urban fabrics is suggested among all flexibility strategies.       In the course of the last century, Iran, whose traditional architecture was based on its ancient philosophies and values combined with metaphysical concepts, found itself faced with different Western ideologies. Given that the number of valuable projects in the contemporary architecture of Iran has decreased, this study was an attempt to answer the following question: To what extent do the competitions held in Iran take into account the cognition and recreation of Iranian architectural elements, especially in residential buildings? In this study, Iranian architecture features and modern architecture features were classified in the categories of plan, ornament, material, volume and facade, and climatic features. In the next step, the award-winning residential projects over 10 years (from 2008 to 2017) were evaluated to determine their features. The research method was qualitative-quantitative. In the qualitative part, historical-analytical method and descriptive-analytical method were used to review award-winning projects and extract traditional and modern architecture elements. Logical reasoning method was used for data analysis, and SPSS was employed in the quantitative part. The sample of the study included 35 projects which had won "Memar-Award". The results show that in award-winning projects, the volume and façade, ornaments and materials were designed more based on the cognition of modern elements, while the plans were more based on the cognition of Iranian architecture. In general, modern elements were more frequently used in award-winning projects in comparison to traditional elements. Therefore, it can be claimed that "Memar-Award", in the residential sector, lead the contemporary architecture toward modern architecture. Manuscript profile

      Phenomenological philosophy believes that dwelling is the main way of interaction with the world and most of the life-world changes take place through the dwelling. However, for contemporary man, dwelling has been reduced to a habitual thing and its quality has been forgotten. Major studies on dwelling have also considered it as only a human behavior in a set of other behaviors and have neglected how to dwell. That is why we are facing a Being Crisis. Martin Heidegger was one of the first thinkers to realize this dilemma and identified dwelling from an ontological perspective. In his view, human existence is based on dwelling. But since dwelling has become an ontic matter, human is not settled down, but is rather homeless. The objective of this study is to explain how human dwell in the world from Heidegger's view and to answer this question that what is the significant relationship between man and the world and how this relationship causes dwelling in the world? For this purpose, by using the method of descriptive/interpretive research and the technique of"library studies", we have first studied anthropology and cosmology and the relationship between man and the world and then the dwelling phenomenon. Based on research findings, in Heidegger's view, interaction with "things" in the environment transforms human`s being-in-the-world into being-in-the-place and elevates the environment to the place.
